An old loan made Left to assign too high
The borrowed money was recorded as arriving in your bank, but what you spent it on was not. Reconcile your bank to its real balance, then cover the red categories from Left to assign.
Why it happens
When you add a loan you borrowed, Ahead records the money arriving in the account you chose under Received into. Money arriving in your bank goes to Left to assign, the same as your salary does.
If you borrowed it a while ago, you have spent it since. But those spends are not in Ahead, so Ahead thinks the money is still in your bank.
| What happens | Your bank | Left to assign | Loan repayments |
|---|---|---|---|
| After you add the loan | ₹6,30,000 | ₹8,40,000 | −₹2,10,000 |
After you add the loan
- Your bank
- ₹6,30,000
- Left to assign
- ₹8,40,000
- Loan repayments
- −₹2,10,000
Left to assign shows everything you borrowed. The category your repayments came out of is red, because no money was ever assigned to it. And your bank shows ₹6,30,000 that is not really there.
The loan itself is right. It shows ₹6,30,000 still to pay.
Fixing it
Two steps
- Open your bank account and press Reconcile. On a phone, it is in the ⋯ menu at the top. Enter the Statement balance your bank shows today, and press Reconcile.
- On the Budget, press Cover it next to each red category, and take the money from Left to assign.
The money that is not really there goes into a Reconciliation Adjustment category, in red. It does not come out of Left to assign by itself. Covering it is the second step.
| What happens | Your bank | Left to assign | Loan repayments | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| After you add the loan | ₹6,30,000 | ₹8,40,000 | −₹2,10,000 | ₹0 |
| You reconcile the bank to ₹0 | ₹0 | ₹8,40,000 | −₹2,10,000 | −₹6,30,000 |
| You cover Loan repayments | ₹0 | ₹6,30,000 | ₹0 | −₹6,30,000 |
| You cover the adjustment | ₹0 | ₹0 | ₹0 | ₹0 |

If your bank shows some money, say ₹40,000, the adjustment is ₹40,000 smaller. Left to assign is then ₹40,000: real money you can plan with.
From now on
Set an Every month target on your repayments category. Money is then assigned before each repayment, and the category does not go red again. Setting a target.
Reconciling locks the transactions it checked. To change one later, click its dot to unlock it. More on reconciling.

- Borrowed from a friend: loan or liability?Add it as a loan, even if there is no schedule and no interest. Then you can record each repayment, and Ahead shows what you still owe.
- Matching your bank balanceTick transactions off as your bank shows them, then reconcile: enter the balance from your bank, and Ahead finds any difference.
- When a category is overspentThe category goes red. Cover it now from another category or from your money left to assign, or leave it, and your household's Overspending setting decides what happens next month.
