Payees: renaming, merging and tidying up
Ahead adds a payee the first time you type a name, and remembers its category. In Settings, Payees lets you rename, merge or remove them.
How payees work
When you type a payee, Ahead uses the one you already have, even if you type it in small letters. A new name becomes a new payee.
Each payee remembers the category you used last. Next time you pick it, the category fills in for you.
Renaming, merging and removing
In Settings
- Open Settings and choose Payees. Each payee shows how many transactions use it and when it was last used.
- Change a name to fix its spelling everywhere at once.
- Two spellings of one shop, like Swiggy and Swiggy.? Press Merge this payee. Every transaction moves to the one you keep.
- Press Remove every unused payee to clear out names no transaction uses.
When Ahead says no
- I cannot delete a payee
- Transactions use it, and they would lose their payee. Merge it into another one instead.
- I cannot rename Transfer: HDFC Bank
- It stands for one of your accounts. Rename the account and the payee follows.
- Ahead did not offer to merge Swiggy Ltd and Swiggy
- Ahead only groups names that differ in spaces or punctuation. Swiggy Ltd could be a different business, so you decide.

- Adding a spend or incomeRecord each spend with the category it comes out of. Income with no category goes to Left to assign; money coming back to a category is a refund.
- Importing a bank statementOpen the account, press Import statement and drop in the PDF, Excel or CSV your bank gave you. Ahead shows every row first and adds nothing until you press Import.
- Finding a transactionOpen the account and search by payee or note. Filter to money in or out, one category, or jump back to a month.
