When a category is overspent

The category goes red. Cover it now from another category or from your money left to assign, or leave it, and your household's Overspending setting decides what happens next month.

Covering it now

When a category goes below ₹0, the top of the Budget says, for example, 1 category needs attention. Open it and press Cover it next to the category.

In the Cover window

  1. Under Take it from, choose Left to assign or a category with money to spare. Ahead starts with the one most likely to cover it.
  2. Check How much. It starts at what the category is short, or at what the other one has, if that is less.
  3. Press Move ₹….

If nothing has money to spare, Ahead says so. You can take money back from a category you can do without this month, or leave the overspend for next month.

If you leave it for next month

What happens is set once for the household, in Settings → Household → Overspending. The household's owner chooses one of two.

ExampleGroceries makes it up (recommended). You spent ₹460 more than Groceries had
  1. End of this month

    Groceries
    −₹460
  2. Next month you add ₹8,000

    Groceries
    ₹7,540

The category that went over pays it back from next month's money. The overspend stays where it happened, so it is easy to see.

ExampleYour spare money covers it
  1. End of this month

    Groceries
    −₹460
    Left to assign
    ₹2,000
  2. Next month starts

    Groceries
    ₹0
    Left to assign
    ₹1,540

Groceries starts next month at ₹0, and the ₹460 comes out of your money left to assign.

On a credit card

It works the same way. The category you spent from goes red, and you cover it like any other. The card's own line is not affected.
