Sharing a loan with the other person
If the other person uses Ahead too, you can both keep the same record of the loan. Anything either of you records waits for the other to agree before it goes on their books.
What sharing does
Sharing links your loan to the same loan in the other person's Ahead. When either of you records something, such as a repayment, the other gets it to agree to. You both see the same figures, and nobody types anything twice.
Inviting them
From the loan's page
- Open Loans and press the loan.
- Press Share and choose Share with their Ahead account.
- Enter their email and press Send it.
They have 14 days to answer, and they do not need an account yet: the email's link lets them make one. Until they answer, the loan's page shows who you are waiting on, and you can Withdraw the invitation.
When you are the one invited
The email's link opens a page that shows the loan and what you would be agreeing to. Press Yes, keep the same record to add it to your books, or Not now.
The loan arrives the other way round on your side: money they lent is money you owe. Everything already recorded on it arrives too, waiting for you to agree.
Agreeing to what the other person records
New entries appear on Loans, under Waiting for you. None of them count until you agree.
For each one
- Press Agree.
- Choose which of your accounts the money moved through, and a Category where the money leaves your budget. They cannot see your accounts, so this is yours to say.
- Press Agree to enter it on your books.
Press Not now to leave one off your books. You can agree to it later.
When several are waiting, tick the ones you want, or Select all, and agree to them together. They all go through the one account you choose, so agree to them in groups by account.
Money that left your budget needs a Category: the one it comes from. Money that came in can go back into a category, or leave it empty to add it to Left to assign. When a group has both, you get one field for each.
When one of you changes something
On a shared loan, whoever recorded an entry, such as a repayment, can change it or delete it: press it on the loan's Statement. It changes on their books straight away.
If the other person had not agreed to it yet, they are simply asked about the corrected entry. If they had, their books stay as they were, and the change waits on Loans under Changed by the other side. Press Agree to take it, through the same account and category you used before, or Keep mine to leave your books as they are.
On an entry the other person recorded, you can change only which of your accounts and categories it went through. Its date, amounts and note are theirs.
The interest rate and end date work the same way. The loan's name and note are yours alone, and never change on the other side.
When your figures differ
The loan's page shows what each of you has outstanding. While something is still waiting to be agreed, the two differ, and the page says why. Once you have both answered everything, they match.
If they still differ, one of you recorded something different, or one of you kept your own figures instead of a change. Whoever recorded the wrong entry can change it, and the other is asked to agree. Or record an Adjustment on the side that is wrong.
Stopping
On the loan's page, press the settings button next to Share and choose Unlink. It is also under Know more on The other side. You each keep the loan and everything recorded on it. It stops being kept in step, and both sides still show that it was shared, and until when.

- Borrowed from a friend: loan or liability?Add it as a loan, even if there is no schedule and no interest. Then you can record each repayment, and Ahead shows what you still owe.
- Lent money to someoneAdd a loan and choose I lent it out. The money leaves a category now, and goes back to that category as it is repaid.
- Change loan typeIf you added money with a friend as a loan, but it now goes both ways, change it into a running balance. Every entry stays, and your budget does not change. On a shared loan, the other person has to agree first.
